Ñ Using SoundJam MP on 300 MHz G3 Series PowerBooks
The following information is from Apple's Tech Info Library article #24985 available at <http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n24985>
Apple has identified an issue with certain digital audio software applications including QuickTime Player, SoundJam MP, and MacAmp on some PowerBook G3 Series models. The issue occurs only when one application reads data asynchronously from an audio CD while another reads or writes a file to the hard drive simultaneously. This in turn may cause the resulting file to be corrupted.
This issue affects only PowerBook G3 Series models with IBM 8 GB drives. To check for this drive, open Apple System Profiler, select the Devices and Volumes tab, and look at the device at Internal ATA 0. The affected drive has these characteristics:
Vendor: IBM-DYLA-28100 Unformatted Size: 7.63 GB
This issue does not affect the most recent PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze keyboard) model or use of the Apple CD Audio Player. Apple is currently developing a solution. Meanwhile, the issue may be avoided by not using these applications to read audio CDs on PowerBook models with this hard drive."
C&G recommends that you contact Apple support for a solution to this problem.
Some Cool Features of SoundJam MP

The "On CD Insert" preference automatically allows rapid encoding of CDs by encoding all songs on a CD when the CD is inserted. After the songs are encoded the CD will optionally eject allowing you to insert the next CD.
Ñ Visual and Audio Effects Plug-ins
Optional plug-ins display cool visual effects while you listen to your favorite music. There are even plug-ins that improve the audio!
For Your Information
Ñ Broken File Icons in the Playlist
Playlists point to actual music files which could be located on a hard drive, server or a removable media such as a Zip or Jaz disk. If a playlist can't locate a music file then the icon for that file will appear as a broken file and will not be playable.
Icons in a playlist will appear broken if the files they point to are unavailable. This could happen if you have thrown away a file, or it was located on a server or removable disk which is not currently mounted. If you mount the server or insert the removable disk and double-click on the song in the playlist, its icon will change back to a normal icon and be playable again. Icons in a playlist can change back and forth between broken and normal depending on whether SoundJam can locate them when the playlist is opened.
Ñ Playing Visual Plug-ins at Full Screen
If you expand a visual plug-in so that the window fills your entire screen (by typing command-F), other visual plug-ins which may be running in the background will show through. This is a problem with Apple╒s DrawSprocketLib file which happens with Mac OS 8.6 and earlier.
Ñ Using SoundJam MP without G3/G4 Computers
Although SoundJam MP will easily play and convert files, it might not be able to support some or any of the optional plug-in files or equalizers on machines with non G3/G4 processors.
Ñ Streaming QuickTime Files
QuickTime 4.x is required for QuickTime Streaming.

Changes in SoundJam MP 1.5
Conversion & MP3 Encoding Features
Ñ Significantly Improved MP3 Encoder Quality
There have been numerous improvements to the encoder which improves the quality of all encodings.
Ñ Variable Bit Rate (VBR) Support
SoundJam's new support for VBR provides maximum quality for any compression level. VBR lets SoundJam continuously adjust the bit rate to suit the music.
Ñ Play While Converting (at Full Speed!)
You can now play a track during its conversion, for real-time feedback on your conversion settings. Even better, conversion continues at full speed while you listen to your music.
Ñ Smart Frequency Reduction
This capability allows SoundJam to eliminate the very highest frequencies of the source material, in an attempt to preserve the most sound data for the middle of the sonic range. For example, when encoding CD-quality audio (44.1 kHz), at 128 kbps this option would discard sound data above 16 kHz. The data removed varies depending on the bit rate and the sample rate used to encode. This option will generally not effect encodings at 160 kbps or higher.
Ñ "Faster" MP3 Encoding Mode
For those in a hurry we have added a "Faster" MP3 encoding mode to quickly encode your favorite music. Using Faster mode with high bit rates (160 kbps or higher) will result in very fast, yet high quality encodings.
Ñ Batch Convert CDs
The "On CD Insert" preference allows rapid conversion of CDs by automatically converting all tracks on a CD when the CD is inserted. After all the tracks are converted the CD will optionally eject, allowing you to insert the next CD.
Ñ Join CD Tracks
Sometimes consecutive tracks on a CD have been designed for playback without interruption. By joining these tracks together into a single file when you convert them, you can eliminate any pause between them during playback.
General Features
Ñ Improved AppleShare Support
SoundJam will now track files across AppleShare connections with greater reliability.
Ñ Audion Face conversion
In addition to converting WinAmp skins, the skin converter is now capable of converting Audion faces into SoundJam skins (requires QuickTime 3.0 or higher).
Ñ Edit CD Info
You can now edit the artist and album names for a CD, not just its tracks.
Ñ Converted Tracks go in an "artist" folder
Converted tracks are now optionally grouped inside an "album" folder which is inside an "artist" folder for better organization of converted tracks.
Ñ Eject CD
Added Eject CD command to the Controls menu.
Ñ Fixed various bugs
As always, we fix minor bugs in each new version.
Improved Playlists
Ñ Duplicate Files are supported in Playlist
SoundJam allows duplicate files in playlist when duplicates are dragged in one at a time.
Ñ Improved Finder Drag and Drop
Dragging a file from the playlist to the Finder now moves it to the desired location. Dragging a file from SoundJam's playlist to the Trash will remove it from SJ's list and move the original item to the trash.
Ñ Copy to Play Order Command
Copy To Play Order command has been added to the pop-down playlists menus. The order in which the tracks are currently listed in the playlist will become the new play order when you select this command.
Ñ Show Original Command
Selecting Show Original will reveal the file of the currently selected track in the Finder.
Ñ New Command Key Support
Command keys have been added for Player, Equalizer, Converter, Master Playlist and CD windows.
Improved CDDB Support
Ñ Multiple Matches
When performing Get Names Online, if multiple matches are found, SoundJam now asks the user which one to use.
Ñ CDDB Lookup
SoundJam's CDDB lookups are now more accurate.
Improved Streaming
Ñ Improved Streaming
Streaming playback has been improved with better buffering support, as well as support for URLs with user names and passwords.
Preference Options
Ñ Added Support for Directing Files
Added advanced options for directing converted and/or opened files to a desired playlist.
Ñ File and Streaming Buffer Sizes
SoundJam now lets you change the buffer sizes used for streams and files. Increasing the buffer size used for streams may help modem or slow network connections keep up with playback.
Ñ ID3 Tag Padding
Disabling "Create ID3 Tags with Padding" allows compatibility with some applications (such as QuickTime 4.0), which have problems reading files with large ID3 tags.
MP3 Encoder Advanced Options
Ñ Original and Copyright Flags
Added information markers for original and copyright status.
Ñ Checksum Flag
This option turns on a verification setting in the MP3 file which can help a player make sure that the file is internally consistent. This can be useful in ensuring that the file has been transmitted correctly.
Ñ Filter Frequencies Below 10 Hz
Filters out sub-audio frequencies so SoundJam's encoder can be more efficient. This results in cleaner sounding encodings.
Ñ On CD Insert
This option controls what SoundJam does when a CD is inserted. The options include: Do Nothing, Start Playing, Convert All Tracks, and Convert All Tracks & Eject.
Improved AppleScript
Ñ AppleScript Enhancements
SoundJam 1.5 provides several new commands and bug fixes.
